Adam Couple’s 1 year anniversary - Interview with WGM’s PD Jung Yoonjung, Part 1:

“WGM“‘s longest running Adam couple, looking back on 1 year with Jokwon & Gain

2AM’s Jokwon and Brown Eyed Girls’ Gain, also known as “Adam couple”, have a big fan base and they became the longest running couple on MBC’s “We Got Married” (WGM).

They had the 1 year anniversary of their make-believe marriage on the 20th of September. They are the longest running couple since the first episode of WGM in March 2008. Both revealed: “I can’t believe that already 1 year has passed by.”

Recently, they went to Jeju-do to celebrate their 1 year anniversary - they went up the Seongsan Ilchulbong where they spent time looking back at the year. They said “It doesn’t feel like we are the longest running couple” and they were left speechless.

I met PD Jung Yoonjung, who has been responsible for their 1 year long make-believe marriage, on the 30th of September at MBC’s Dream Center in Ilsan. PD Jung Yoonjung visited Thailand for recordings of the Victoria & Nichkhun couple on the 16th and on the 27th, she went to Jeju-do for recordings of the Jokwon & Gain couple.

“Ah, I can finally have some time to breathe. There was no time to breathe because the recordings kept going on.”

But she looked happy. She is the person leading “WGM” into its second golden era and she is the one who has been raising the longest running couple.

Q. Congratulations on Jokwon & Gain’s 1 year anniversary. As the PD in charge, it must bring back old memories.
A. That’s true. I’m very thankful that the babies (PD Jung gives the Adam couple as well as all the participating people the nickname “baby”) broke the stereotype of “WGM” which people had. Some people had thoughts like “The participating people have contracts for 6 months”, “after a certain time, the freshness disappears”, “they held out long enough” about the program. I’m just thankful that they resolved such thoughts.

Q. The Adam couple is receiving much love. But they also suffered due to many breakup rumors.
A. I have no idea for whom these breakup rumors were supposed for. Many breakup rumors disappeared and I denied them from time to time and the truth came out in the end. The problem is that the breakup rumors also affect the kids. And it’s possible that a couple breaks up because of “rumors”. But we overcame every crisis. Jokwon and Gain are great because they weren’t deeply affected (by these rumors).

Q. But there are a lot more good memories. Was there a special reason why you paired them up in the first place?
A. 1 year ago… it must’ve been a long time looking at how my memory is blurry. First of all, they said each other’s names at the interviews back then. As you’ve already seen on the show. That was the biggest reason.

Q. Did you expect them to last so long?
A. I didn’t expect it at all. The only thing I had in mind was that there would more funny scenes compared to other couples because of Kwonnie’s popular “kkab”-character.

Q. When were you convinced about the couple?
A. It didn’t take long after the first meeting. Until the second recording, we were in the stage of adjusting to Jokwon and Gain. I thought “Amazing” while watching Kwonnie. After that, we proceeded with the third recording and the black room interview was so much fun. And both were really honest. I really felt that there was nothing inapproachable in their honesty. In fact, they were friends before “WGM” but they adjusted so well to the situations. And I was 100% convinced when the tempo increased.

Q. What do you think is the secret of the longest running couple?
A. The reason why they have lasted for more than 1 year is because they have been doing a great job. When a couple gets paired up, the viewers can imagine as to where the couple’s limits would be. But they accomplished the things which everyone could do and they even outdid themselves during the 1 year. And the title “longest running couple” could’ve also been a burden for them. But they handled it wisely.

And the Adam couple has a wide fan base. BEG’s fan base is supportive and Kwonnie’s appeal to middle-aged women in “Sebawki” also worked in their favor. A couple of days ago, when we went up the Seongsan Ilchulbong, a female fan in her 4~50’s asked “Are you here for your 1 year anniversary?” and “Is that your bare face, Gain?” People say that “WGM” is a playground for idols but the range of viewers has widened because of this couple.

Q. Is there something you want to say to the Adam couple?
A. “Troubles, hardships and happiness” is their motto. They overcame the difficulties and they have come along this way. To be honest, the recordings are very difficult. So many difficult things happened, especially when we were recording in Hong Kong. First of all, the weather was really cold and the event was delayed - amidst the cold weather, we were freezing and waiting. I was very sorry and it felt like a situation caused by my mistake. But they went through it without complaints. I am very thankful as a person who is working on “WGM”.

2AM’s Jokwon is as playful overseas.

On the 30th, Jokwon posted on his Twitter “www.ibighit.com will be opened today! 2AM’s video highlights from Singapore will be released!”, to introduce the new video. The video showed 2AM’s arrival in Singapore, Jokwon and Seulong resting in the hotel, and the performance and fanmeeting that they held in Singapore.

What left the biggest impression was in the hotel, clad in shorts and a tank top, Jokwon was seen getting his hair done and humming a song, and subsequently said to the stylist: “Ajumma, make my hair look nicer!” He looked quite the rascal, and when he was humming the song he purposely changed his voice, eliciting uncontrollable laughter from those around him.
